Reference limits

Sides sorted longest to shortest; bag orientation is taken into account. Compare using the unit you measured your bag in.

Porter · Airline-published limits
Bag typeAll three outside dimensionsWeight
Cabin bag55 × 40 × 23 cm21.5 × 15.5 × 9 in9 kg / 20 lb per item
Personal item43 × 33 × 16 cm17 × 13 × 6 in9 kg / 20 lb per item

These limits apply to each outside dimension. Their sum does not replace the individual limits. The checker accounts for bag orientation.

What your fare changes

Physical size and ticket allowance are separate questions. Choose the exact fare. If you do not know it yet, compare the dimensions while leaving the ticket allowance unresolved.

  • Basic normally includes a personal item only on Canada, US and sun routes.
  • Basic to Europe/Africa and Standard outside Canada/Europe/Africa: the fees pages and tariffs do not agree. Confirm cabin-bag inclusion in your booking.
  • The three tariffs currently linked by Porter were read: domestic, transborder and international. They confirm 9 kg / 20 lb per item.
  • A purchased Basic Express add-on can include a cabin bag. The cited tariff sets a 9 kg weight limit per item.

Worked examples

These examples illustrate the reference rules. Open a check to see the bag and ticket separately, with the applicable limitations.

Basic within Canada, even with a light bag

A 54 × 39 × 22 cm suitcase weighing 8 kg meets both limits in this example. Basic normally excludes that suitcase on the selected domestic route. A Basic Express add-on must actually appear in the booking.

Basic to Europe: check the booking

This bag meets the size and 9 kg weight limits. For Basic to Europe, Porter’s documents do not give the same cabin-bag inclusion answer. Check that it appears in your booking before travelling.

Standard, but 100 g over

A 9.1 kg suitcase exceeds the 9 kg ceiling even when every dimension fits and Standard includes this bag category. Weight remains a separate requirement.

Before measuring

Yes. Measure the bag packed and closed at its outermost points. Bulging pockets and protruding wheels count too. The calculator uses the dimensions you enter. Potential compression is not permission: measure the bag as you will carry it and check the airline’s sizer.

No. The physical sizer, applicable ticket rules and onboard space still matter. An airline may require gate-checking even when the dimensions fit.
