A correctly sized cabin bag may still be excluded from an Economy Basic ticket. The route and any benefits attached to the booking matter too.

Reference limits

Sides sorted longest to shortest; bag orientation is taken into account. Compare using the unit you measured your bag in.

Air Canada · Airline-published limits
Bag typeAll three outside dimensionsWeight

These limits apply to each outside dimension. Their sum does not replace the individual limits. The checker accounts for bag orientation.

What your fare changes

Physical size and ticket allowance are separate questions. Choose the exact fare. If you do not know it yet, compare the dimensions while leaving the ticket allowance unresolved.

  • Basic tickets purchased on or after January 3, 2025 exclude a standard cabin bag on Canada, US, Mexico, Caribbean and Central America routes.
  • An itinerary with an international connection may have a different allowance. Check the whole booking.
  • The carry-on page gives no numeric weight limit. The cabin bag must be light enough to place in the overhead bin without assistance.

Worked examples

These examples illustrate the reference rules. Open a check to see the bag and ticket separately, with the applicable limitations.

A 55 × 40 × 23 cm suitcase

These measurements meet Air Canada’s published centimetre limits. A Standard ticket includes a cabin bag. You must be able to stow it without assistance.

The right size on a domestic Basic ticket

A 54 × 39 × 22 cm suitcase meets the size limit. On a domestic Economy Basic ticket bought from January 3, 2025, it is nevertheless not included. A personal item and an overhead cabin bag are separate allowances.

The same suitcase on a European route

For this single Air Canada-operated flight, the reference rule includes a cabin bag with Basic. The bag must also be light enough to stow unassisted. A connection requires checking the whole booking.

A suitcase sold as “22 inches”

22 × 14 × 9 in converts exactly to 55.88 × 35.56 × 22.86 cm. Its longest side is therefore 0.88 cm over the 55 cm limit. A product label and a Standard fare do not remove that excess.

Before measuring

Yes. Measure the bag packed and closed at its outermost points. Bulging pockets and protruding wheels count too. The calculator uses the dimensions you enter. Potential compression is not permission: measure the bag as you will carry it and check the airline’s sizer.

No. The physical sizer, applicable ticket rules and onboard space still matter. An airline may require gate-checking even when the dimensions fit.
